In 2014, the Princess of Africa Foundation unveiled a world-first the Backing Vocalists and Session Musicians (BVSM) Awards at the iconic State Theatre in Pretoria. The evening gathered artists,
legends, and industry hearts who came to honour the unsung heroes behind the melodies we love. As one author once said, “The greatest tragedy is not dying, but dying without blossoming.” That night, the stage bloomed with recognition for those whose harmonies and rhythms have shaped countless musical journeys. The celebration continued with the inaugural BVSM Awards in November 2015, hosted in partnership with the City of Tshwane, again at the State Theatre The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Biennial Awards proudly followed, finding a new home at the Soweto Theatre presented in collaboration with the Department of Arts and Culture.
Every great awards ceremony stands on the credibility of its panel, and the Foundation was privileged to have an exceptional judging team Shino Kikai, Tlale Makhene, Mpho Tshikhudo, Norton Ramavhoya, Sean Brokensha, Vicky Vilakazi and Khanyo Maphumulo — each bringing distinct expertise and insight to the selection process.
This year’s awards celebrate a vibrant spectrum of genres — Reggae, Traditional, Gospel, and Afrikaans Music. Guests will be treated to appearances by Thuli Thabethe, Tumelo Mothotoane, Xolly Mncwango, Vicky Kente, Bongi Gwala, Tshego AMG, sponsors’ representatives; as well as Woman Radio presenters Balesang Mashego, Boby Nkoana, Loagolentle Makena, Gugulethu Motsei, Aaron Christopher, Karabo Phaka, and Kwanele Motha. Three Lifetime Achievers will also be honoured, with a Special Award presented by none other than the Founder herself, Yvonne Chaka Chaka. Each BVSM recipient will receive R5 000 in cash, alongside an endowment policy valued at R20 000 to support their welfare. Nominees will also be celebrated with certificates, goodie bags, and the Foundation’s own Princess of Africa Hair Products, among other tokens of appreciation. Previous ceremonies have seen musical greats like Victor Masondo and Themba Mkhize — both award recipients — leading as musical directors.
