A nomination and adjudication process was adopted for the awards starting in 2017 at the Soweto Theatre. The 2019 award ceremony was held on the 15th of march 2020 at the Soweto Theatre as well. The awards cover a wide range of genres including Jazz, Hip-Hop, Gospel, Maskandi, Mbaqanga, Boeremusiek, Gospel and Kwaito .
The awards also consider gender parity as well as recognising the golden oldies from the past decades (1960s to 2000) while also taking into cognisance the growing talent in contemporary music.
